Is Finasteride Affecting My Semen? - Monday, March 01, 2010

Question:

I've been using Propecia (finasteride) for about a year now. My hair loss has slowed down considerably, but I recently noticed something a bit odd: My semen seems thinner and more watery than usual. Also, it's become quite sticky. It's hard to articulate exactly; it just seems a bit "different". I'm considering taking a quarter of Proscar every other day instead. Am I just imagining this?

Answer:

Watery seminal fluid is a known side effect of finasteride; however, other factors such as the frequency of ejaculation can also influence this. And stickiness is quite normal in this department, don't you think? It sounds like what you're observing is a common, mild reaction to this hair loss medication.

It's obviously a good idea to continue monitoring your sexual health. Just don't spend too much time analyzing the consistency of your semen. A lot of Propecia users report that side effects seem to subside as their dosage regimen is adjusted, so you might be more comfortable taking 1.25 mg of finasteride every other day.
